Grumeti Serengeti Tented Camp

Serengeti National Park
The most luxurious lodge in the Western Serengeti, Grumeti Serengeti Tented Camp is inspired by Tanzania’s annual Great Migration. A wild and remote experience in the midst of ample resident game, it is ideally situated on the banks of a tributary of the Grumeti River and enjoys a prime position near one of the most famous fording points of the wildebeest migration. Rustic yet sophisticated, the tents combine hues of wildebeest grey with accents of natural stone and bone, as well as bleached cypress. Whimsical interiors provide quirky touches that emphasize the natural beauty of the setting.  All ten of the tented suites feature shaded private decks that look out onto the Grumeti River and its resident hippo. Stone shower towers are open to the sun and stars. Two of the tents cater for families travelling together and are connected by an enclosed walkway that allows easy access between the tents while maintaining complete privacy. Intimate guest areas include open-fronted sitting and dining areas, as well as a domed bar, all adorned with beaded artefacts. The spacious decks… CLOSED FOR RENOVATIONS UNTIL JUNE 2022

are perfect for enjoying sundowners overlooking the water and the camp’s rim-flow swimming pool provides a view of the hippos lazing in the river. Healthy and colorful meals can be enjoyed on an extensive deck with beautiful views of the river. The dining area opens up to a traditional African boma, where dinner is served beneath a billion stars as traditional jikos (fires) and outdoor ovens produce mouth-watering aromas

Famed for its endless grasslands and excellent wildlife sightings, the open plains of the magnificent Serengeti National Park are home to 35 species of plains-dwelling game, as well as prolific birdlife. Grumeti Serengeti Tented Camp is set in the remote Western Serengeti and offers one of the best wildlife experiences in this incredibly picturesque area, which enjoy far fewer tourist numbers than many other areas in the park. The camp is situated on a by-water of the Grumeti River, known for its dramatic wildebeest crossings and enormous Nile crocodiles. Tucked into a strip of riverine forest, guests thrill to the antics of the hippo resident in the tranquil pool in front of the camp and the spectacular pied colobus monkeys, found nowhere else in the Serengeti. Every year, in June and July, Africa’s renowned Great Migration passes through the Grumeti region and hundreds upon thousands of wildebeest, zebra and other herbivores cross the Grumeti River, risking the jaws of some of Africa’s largest crocodiles. During the remainder of the year, the area offers exclusive game viewing far from the crowds, with the open Western Serengeti plains attracting the elegant cheetah and large prides of lion, as well as clans of hyena that number up to a hundred individuals. The riverside thickets are the ideal dwelling place for leopard and elephant. This area also lies in the path of the annual movement of exceptional numbers of topi antelope.

At Grumeti Serengeti Tented Camp your days are filled with thrilling safaris, while the nights come alive with the warmth and romance of Africa. As dawn breaks over the Serengeti, a gentle tap on your door will wake you to the delights of a brand new day. Get ready for our morning safari before meeting our guide over a fragrant cup of tea or coffee and some delicious rusks or biscuits to decide what we hope to see and do that day. Set out in an open 4x4 safari vehicle to explore the quintessential landscapes of the Serengeti. If we are travelling in June or July, the Great Migration may be passing through the area. Our guide will attempt to predict the movements of the herds and maybe even intercept the wildebeest as they are crossing the Grumeti River. During the other months of the year, we will set off to track the spectacular resident wildlife. Even though the Serengeti is a national park, Grumeti is situated in an area that is not easily accessible to vehicles from other camps and we will see relatively few other tourists on our game drive. This is a good time to look out for the cheetah that roam the open plains of the Western Serengeti, while we may also come across leopard or lion enjoying their prize from the night’s hunt. Our guide will break for a hot drink and a snack to refresh us.

Sated from a morning filled with the sights and sounds of Africa we return to the camp for a delicious breakfast, with a platter of fresh fruit, cheese, homemade preserves and freshly baked bread delivered to our table, followed by a selection of hot breakfast dishes. There is time for an indulgent siesta before lunch, which is served on the open decks overlooking the river. After lunch cool off with a refreshing dip in the camps pool or spend the early afternoon watching the frolics of resident family of hippo.

After late afternoon tea, we head off in search of wildlife once again with an afternoon game drive. Large herds of buffalo and families of elephant are likely to be found near the river at this time, drinking and splashing in the water before settling down for the night. The immense crocodiles in the Grumeti River will be basking on the shores in the dying light of the sun, while we may get a glimpse of hippo getting ready to emerge onto dry land for their night time graze. The area’s large prides of lion  are likely to be on the move as they warm up for the nights hunt and the whooping calls of hyena can be heard as immense clans of up to a hundred individuals keep in touch with one another. Stop at a scenic spot for sundowners as the sun sinks beneath the endless plains before heading back to the luxury of the camp.

As we gather before dinner, a tempting array of healthy and delicious bite-sized snacks will be served to ward off any potential hunger pangs. Dinner begins with a homemade East African soup or a light, flavorful salad, followed by a hearty and wholesome meal enjoyed beneath the stars. Desert provides a last decadent and irresistible treat as we relax around a blazing fire and contemplate the latest day’s adventures on your African safari before heading back to your tent and the comfort of your king-sized bed.
